CASTELL 9000 PENCILS
카스텔 9000 연필들
- ABSTRACT -
Castell 9000 is a living history of Faber Castell and the world of pencils.
A.W. FABER attained a huge success with its famous Polygrade pencils in the mid to late 19th century.
However, a strong rival, Koh-I-Noor appeared and started to dominate the pencil market with a mighty force.
A game changer to overcome the situation was indispensable for A.W. FABER, so Alexander Graf von Faber-Castell came up with the new "green" pencil with the name of his family "Castell."
It was originally planned to be crimson color, but there was a similar color competitor made by Johann Faber, so Alexander decided the color to be green.
I heard that this dark green color was inspired by the military uniform of Alexander that he wore when he was in service.
The pencil adopted fine graphite purifying system in 16 degrees of hardness developed by Dr. Böhm.
The grand finale was achieved by the trade mark of two jousting knights.
The knight with green pencil spear, representing Castell pencil, wins the knight with the yellow pencil spear, which surely implies the victory of Castell pencils over the Koh-I-Noor pencils.
This emblamatic pencil has been widely loved all around the world for about 120 years.
As it has existed for a very long time, both the pencil itself and its packaging have suffered numerous changes.
It's nearly impossible to track all the variations, but I tried to collect important ones.
One of them must be anniversary editions in (1), (2), (6), (19), (20), and (21)-(23).
Another notable pencil is (14) with "M" grade.
This doesn't belong to the normal degrees of H, B, and F.
The natural edition (15) is also a good variation of Castell 9000 pencil.
It's not on the photo, but the royal metal edition also exists, although it doesn't look like Castell 9000 pencil to me. (Link is at the bottom of the post.)
