Graf von Faber Castell's pen of the year series is so famous between pen collectors that no explanation will be needed for the series.
Graf von Faber Castell has showed off its renowned POTYs with every different concept since 2003.
POTY was not released in 2013, so POTY 2023 is 20th POTY model.
Although I don't collect every POTY, I try to collect some meaningful POTYs.
Until now, I've collected POTY 2011 (250th anniversary), POTY 2012 (10th POTY / full gold color I love), POTY 2016 SLE (the least numbers were made among 2nd generation POTY - only 120 pieces / full gold color with gold maki-e), and POTY 2009 lipizzaner (the least number POTY ever made - only 7 pieces!)
I didn't plan to buy POTY 2023, but as soon as I realized that its concept is Egypt, I changed my mind to purchase this one because I've liked the Egyptian culture since I was young.
I'm happy to have a POTY with Egypt concept.
2nd generation POTYs have a very huge case.
The case itself has no special features compared to other POTY cases.
It is a huge, all black color wooden case.
The big square hole is the place for the ink.
POTY 2023 released with the ink of rapis-lazuli color, which is exclusive for this POTY 2003.
This one has a blue cap unlike other GvFC inks.
Warranty cards and brochure.
The color is a matt black color, but it sometimes show rainbow colors depending on the angle.
The whole metal body is made of diamond-like carbon coating. (DLC coating)
The cap design is inspired by the crown of Nefertiti.
The tallness of the crown implied Nefertiti's power.
HANDMADE IN GERMANY.
The top part is a scarab made of lapis-lazuli.
The scarab was admired as a symbol of good luck in the ancient Egypt.
Since those beetles moved away from the Nile river right before it floods, they were sacred as the omen of flood.
Also, ancient Egytians believed that the hair of god was made of lapis-lazuli, and adorned the death mask of Tutankhamun with this gemstone.
It was considered to be a jewel representing intelligence, wisdom, and insight.
End cap is decorated with 24K gold Horus eye.
In ancient Egypt, gold represented power and wealth, and only pharaohs were allowed to decorate with it.
Furthermore, Horus eye symbolizes the protection, perfection, and power.
Side of the end cap is adorned with lotus patterns, which implied the regeneration and rebirth in amcient Egypt.
It is also written 2023 above in hieroglyphs. (𓆽𓎇𓏼)
The hieroglyphs are engraved in the whole barrel.
They are the names of 12 gods and goddesses of ancient Egypt mythology.
The serial number is inside the end cap. (XXX/375)
As far as I know, this is the first all gold color nib among POTY series.
Every POTY used 18K bicolor gold nib untill 2022, and even special limited edition models of 2014-2016 used bicolor nibs with increased gold color proportions.
Since gold was so meaningful in ancient Egypt culture, it has the full gold color nib.
Moreover, the grip part is made of 24K gold plated rings and blue color rings, following the design of Tutankhamun's death mask.
