LIPIZZANER SONDEREDITION 2009
그라폰 파버카스텔 올해의 펜 2009 리피자너 스페셜 에디션 (7개)
Since 2003, Graf von Faber Castell has unveiled various pen of the years with all different concepts.
POTYs undoubtedly have become the flagship of GVFC, as well as the envy of many pen collectors.
What would be the most special one among so many POTYs?
The answer might depend on people, of course.
The first thing comes to my mind is the POTY 2012 diamond edition, which is the most expensive POTY with only 10 limited pieces.
Many people thinks that it is the POTY with the least number of amount.
It is reasonable since it has been made only 10 pieces!
However, there is POTY with only 7 pieces!
It is not well known because this was never been sold.
It was delivered by an auction from GVFC.
Most people even don't know its existence, naturally.
I'll enclose about its background at the end of the post.
This will help you to understand more about this pen!
Let me introduce it.
The case is the same with other POTY 2009 cases.
The combination of white and black color - simple but powerful.
POTY 2009 was made of hand-woven horsehair of horse's tail.
This special edition is made of Lipizzaner's horsehair.
"LIPIZZANER EDITION SPANISCHE HOFREITSCHULE 2009"
"LIPIZZANER EDITION SPANISH RIDING SCHOOL 2009"
The brochure is not special. It is the same as that of usual POTY 2009.
If you compare this with usual POTY 2009, you will find out that the pattern looks different.
The original one has a checked pattern, while the special version has a somewhat stripe pattern.
The pen has its numbering on the barrel (x/7) unlike other POTYs.
Other POTYs have the numbering inside the end cap.
The bottom / top view of the pen.
There are no jewels. Just GVFC's old marks.
Why Faber Castell made this special limited edition with only 7 pieces?
I can just speculate about that.
One clue is that lipizzaner was Count Roland von Faber-Castell's favorite horse.
He enjoyed riding horses since his early ages, and this edition might be dedicated to him.
The nib is 18K bicolor gold nib.
"Pen of the Year 2009: Special Edition Made of Lipizzaner Horsehair Raises Funds for Good Causes. A special edition of the Graf von Faber-Castell Pen of the Year 2009 is currently raising substantial amounts for various charitable causes at multiple fundraising galas. The even more exclusive version of this extraordinary Magnum writing instrument came about through a collaboration with the Spanish Riding School: The Vienna traditional institution donated the tail hair from several Lipizzaner stallions to create seven exclusive Pen of the Year fountain pens, which are being exclusively auctioned for charitable purposes. The first piece was offered during a fundraising gala in October 2009 at the Imperial Stables, fetching a sum of 15,500 euros, benefiting the Piper Stud Farm and thus contributing to the breeding of the famous purebred stallions. The second Lipizzaner writing instrument was presented at the Emerald Ball in London to an exclusive audience. To kick off the Christmas activities in 2009, the prestigious department store Harrods invited 250 internationally renowned VIPs to a fundraising gala where exquisite gift baskets were auctioned off. The proceeds from the auction were donated to Elton John's AIDS Foundation. The special edition of the Pen of the Year 2009 was part of a gift basket that changed hands for the proud sum of 18,000 euros. A third piece will be auctioned on February 8, 2010, at the ORF Seitenblicke Charity Gala in support of 'Light into Darkness.' The remaining Lipizzaner fountain pens are already earmarked for other charity events. Since 2003, the Graf von Faber-Castell Collection has annually presented an exclusive Magnum fountain pen, known as the Edition Pen of the Year, which intricately showcases unique materials. Among others, the pen has previously been adorned with amber, mammoth ivory, and Galuchat ray leather on its shaft. The Pen of the Year 2009 once again establishes an example of masterful craftsmanship: Its shaft is handwoven from horsehair."
