Today is my birthday, so I'd like to post something related to the birthday of Faber Castell.
I mean, what happened in the 100th birthday of Faber Castell.

Faber Castell was founded in 1761 as the world's first pencil company.
Can you imagine what Faber Castell was doing 100 years after its foundation?
Here's one of the answer.
In 1861, exactly 100 years after the birth of A.W. FABER, the company applied for a patent regarding the leadholder.

A.W.FABER PATENT IN 1861

Since it doesn't have an explanation related to it, the exact meaning is not delivered but we can still get some important information from this.
The kernel must be the inventor, John Lothar Faber, the 4th successor of A.W. FABER company.
We can also find the date of activation was August 13th 1861.

The result is this one.
This antique leadholder claims this has the mechanism of the above patent.
No 2. A.W. FABER'S PATENT. AUG 13TH 1861.

It has a hexagonal wood body, and the back end is a white color plastic.
Since it has lived for a very long time, it has some tiny scratches, but the condition is astonishing considering its age.
So, it's okay the patent was published in 1861, but does it mean that this leadholder was made in 1861 too?

There are a good news and a bad news.
Bad news is, of course, we can't precisely determine its exact age.
The good news is however, we can narrow down when it was made.

On the backside, there inscribed new letters.
E. FABER, 133 WILLIAM STR. N.Y.
It's easy to notice this is an address.

The address, 133 William street of New York, was where E. FABER once located.
Eberhard Faber, started in 1849 in the above address, moved to 718 & 720 Broadway in 1877.
Taking this into account, we obtain a reasonably specific date - it was made between 1861 and 1877.

Another thing to mention is the relationship of A.W. FABER and E. FABER.
Eberhard Faber was the sole agent of A.W. FABER in the U.S.
A.W. FABER's Pencils sold in the U.S. similarly have imprintings of E. FABER on the backside, and one can infer when the pencil was made based on the address as I did.

We now know that this leadholder was sold in the U.S. through the E. FABER, and was made by A.W. FABER between 1861 and 1877.
I hope it was informative enough!

Faber Castell also make leadholders even in these days.
For example, I also have sterling silver TK9400 limited edition that was made in 1998 to celebrate 50th anniversary of TK9400.
Actually, this patent introduced the first leadholder, so it's no exaggeration to say A.W. FABER is the father of the leadholder pencils.
It's interesting to have one of the ealriest leadholders in the world!
