A.W.FABER PENCILS IN LATE 1800s

A.W. FABER started its business as the world's first pencil company in 1761.
That is, its first pencil was made in 1700s.
It's nearly impossible to find those long-standing pencils, of course.
Still, pencils made in the late 1800s can be found quite often even for now.
This includes one of the most famous pencils in A.W. FABER, the polygrade pencils.

Compared to them, these pencils are not that well-known.
They even don't have their own names.
These are simply called No.3 pencils and No.4 pencils.

Historically, these pencils seem to be imported by Eberhard Faber to be sold in the US.
As a proof, there are pencils with E.Faber's stamp on them.
However, my pencils doesn't have E.Faber's stamps and only A.W.FABER's names are on them.

I can think of this in two ways.
First, these pencils were from other countries than the US.
In that case, there doesn't need to be any importer, so only A.W.FABER's name is on the pencils.
The other possibility is these pencils were somehow taken out before they arrived at the E.Faber's factory.
There could be other probable stories, the answer is not clear though.

They have hexagonal bodies with circular leads.
The reason I point out this point is polygrade pencils had circular bodies with square leads.

A.W. FABER No_3.
The pencil has a light brown color.
The lead grade No.3 can be thought of as the H grade.

A.W.FABER PENCILS IN LATE 1800s

A.W. FABER No_4.
The pencil has a dark brown color now.
Different grade pencils seem to have different colors as well.
This lead grade matches to the 2H grade.

Even these pencils were made in around 150 years ago, they are luckily in quite good conditions.
The best point is they don't have E.Faber's name - I don't collect E.Faber's products above all.
