PENTEL SUPER MULTI 8

Among many Japanese stationery companies, I always feel that Pentel sticks to the functionality.
In other words, Pentel has the so-called "monozukuri"(ものづくり).

On the other hand, Pentel sometimes doesn't pay much attention to other important things like design and practicality.
This applies to the latest post of Pentel's Ergonomix.
In fact, this is one of the reason Pentel has been losing its power in the market.
Pentel's high quality mechanical pencils like graph 1000 and smash have been loved for decades, but the modern trend has moved to pens with nice design and practicality.

I think this pen shows what I said.
Its name is Super Multi 8.
As the name says, it is a multipen with 8 types of color.
I'd rather say it is a multi color clutch pencil.

There is an instruction.

Multi 8 series was first released in 1987.
The series has some variations in design, but every one of them are far away from being trendy.
For around 40 years, this series has never experienced drastic renovations in design.

In these days, this pen has many strong rivals Stylefit, and even 10 color multipens became common.

Super Multi 8. PH803 for multi writing function.
The instruction manual says PH801 is for all purpose, and PH802 is for checking use.

One can select the color by rotating this clip part.
If you use this, you will find out how much this procedure is cumbersome.
This mechanism is a bit disappointing in my opinion.
Again, Pentel lost its practicality.

This is why I'd call this as multi clutch pencil.
It is not the usual multipen, but it grabs the color lead in this way.

Pentel provides color leads exclusive for multi 8 series under the same name.
It's easy to find color 8 leads of Pentel, although it's not so easy to find this multipen.

The 8 colors are usual ballpoint pens of RGB colors, fluorescent pink and yellow color leads, red color lead, HB lead, and PPC non copying lead.

It's really impressive that Pentel focuses on small details.
How many on the Earth need PPC non copying leads?
Pentel pays tribute this to the minority, and it is the "monozukuri" of Pentel.
Not every pen needs to be loved by everyone.
Some people need to make pens for minor purposes, knowing they must not be sold well.
Thankfully, Pentel does the work.
