FABER CASTELL - OSMIA FOUNTAIN PEN 553D BLACK
파버카스텔 - 오스미아 만년필 553D
This is a fountain pen with model number 553D.
This seems to be the common fountain pen at first sight, but it has a very interesting point in fact.
Faber Castell's name on the cap.
Osmia 553D.
It has both names of Faber Castell and Osmia, like this one.
They might have been made in the same era, perhaps like mid 50s?
What could be the meaning of 'D'?
The only thing I can think of is 'double,' and the reason will be clear soon.
Osmia's logo on the cap.
The most interesting point is here!
As you can see, the nib has double breather holes.
The purpose of having two holes is not obvious, but some people say that these were used to make stiffer nibs.
Some people also called this kind of two-hole nibs "manifold nibs," but the word "manifold nibs" doesn't necessarily mean nibs with two breathing holes.
I surmise these tries of making two holes were mostly done by Pelikan since 1950s, and Faber Castell seemed to try similar style.
As far as I know, this 553D model is the only Faber Castell fountain pen with two breathing holes, so I assume both Faber Castell and consumers were not impressed by this experiment.
By the way, the nib is Faber Castell's 14k gold nib with Osmia's diamond logo.
