One obstacle in collecting vintage pens is to date its history.
Pens tend to have several hints to estimate its date in many cases, but it's not always like that.
In that sense, this mechanical pencil might be hopeful as it has at least a clue.

Let me first talk about its appearance.

A.W. FABER MECHANICAL PENCIL

It has a light green marble patterns on the barrel, and has a gold trim at the end of the barrel.
I think this kind of showy design can't be found easily in Faber Castell pens, since the company prefers neat and stately designs.
I've seen several Faber Castell's vintage fountain pens, but I haven't met this kind of design and color yet.
I really wonder whether there exists its counterpart fountain pen.

This one functions as one rotates the front cone part, unlike modern E-motion twist pens, which need to turn the back end part.
I know Osmia mechanical pencils work in the same way, I can't tell which one is earlier though.

The key to estimate its age.
It is written A.W. FABER and U.S.A on the clip.
However, I don't have much knowledge about A.W. FABER's American factory.

First, I guess it was made no later than 1950s, since Faber company used the name Faber Castell since then.
The company historically used the name A.W. FABER, and then A.W. FABER-CASTELL, and finally FABER CASTELL.

Additionally, I found an article that there was a A.W. FABER's plant in Newark, near New York, and the plant was sold in 1918.
Although I can't convince this was the only A.W. FABER's factory in the US, if it was made there this mechanical pencil becomes quite older.

Anyway, I can't conclude anything, and my guess could be wrong.
I hope to find someone who knows the truth about this mechanical pencil.
I'll be happy if anyone who reads this post has some ideas about this mechanical pencil.

I finish this with the photo of back end part, since I found another A.W. FABER mechanical pencil that was made in the US.
That one has no marble patterns of the body, but has pattern at the back end part.
